the obligatory Harry Potter movie post
Jul. 11th, 2007 11:32 pmI just got back from seeing the movie and I'm too excited to sleep yet!
Overall I liked it a lot. This was the first Harry Potter movie I've seen after reading the book, so it was a lot different for me than seeing the others. It was hard for me to not think of the book and try to fill in holes while watching the movie. I purposefully read spoilers so I'd know what to expect as far as changes go.
I think they did a good job of capturing the main story of the book. There were parts that were cut that disappointed me, but I expected that. But, I think that everything that was cut/changed/moved around made sense within the context of the film. Also, there were a few new/changed things that I thought were really good, one of which blew me away and almost made me cry.
However, the problem with adapting an almost 900 page book is that while you can tell the main story, all the side plots get pushed aside. Plus, even though the movie was over 2 hours long, it felt very rushed. Also, there are so many good characters in the book that get pushed aside or hardly get any screen time in the movie. While I thought all the cuts made sense, it was sad to see so little of such good characters.
All the actors were fantastic. Daniel Radcliffe is really becoming a very good actor.
I'll see the movie more times definitely, and the "one big difference" was absolutely fantastic, but when it comes to canon, I'll stick with the books.
Voldemort possessing Harry at the end. WOW. This was the one thing I wish I hadn't read about, because I ALMOST starting crying and I know I would have been totally blown away if I hadn't already known about it. I don't really remember this much from the book, and it definitly did not have the same effect on me as the movie did.
I'll post more about specific parts tomorrow.
OH, before I forget, one thing I wanted to mention was the idea in the movie about education being more than just memorizing books. A big problem in education is that kids aren't taught how to think. This movie addressed just that; in fact, Umbridge had a line that was fantastic, but I can't remember it now. :( Anyways, working in education I really appreciated what this movie was trying to put across.
